Low Maintenance Landscaping
One of the biggest & most time consuming aspects of garden maintenance is watering & lawn care, minimising watering requirements & keeping the amount of grass to mow to a minimum is a great place to start on your low maintenance garden.
Low Maintenance & Drought Tolerant Plants
There are literally hundreds of plants to choose from that require little to no water & very little maintenance. They range from native to Mediterranean, from large to small. I have composed a small list of some of my favourite low maintenance garden plants.
- Cordyline Purple Sensation– Beautiful! Not only is this purple Cordyline low maintenance & hardy but it also provides vibrant colour all year round. Grows to 2 meters & is frost tolerant.
- Nandina Domestica Nana – Dwarf variety of the Japanese Sacred Bamboo, is not invasive or destructive as the larger varieties are. Grows to approximately 30cm tall & 30cm wide. Foliage changes colour from red to green.
- Agave Attenuata – Beautiful modern looking succulent plant with broad, grey green leaves 50-70cm long. Very easy to propagate, hardy & drought tolerant, although needs protection from frost.
- Sansevieria (Snake Plant) - Tall, sharply spiked, variegated leaves. Easy to grow even in conditions of almost total neglect. Great in a garden or in a pot. Grow up to approximately 1.5 meters tall.
- Yucca Plant – Very hardy plant grows up to 2.5 metres in height, spiky sword shape leaves.

Use Mulch
Mulch is great for low maintenance gardens. For one it reduces watering needs and also suppresses weeds.
Rock Garden Landscaping
Generally contain drought tolerant low maintenance plants. The rocks also provide a décor that doesn’t ever need to be watered or maintained.
